Youtube video fitness marketing tips

OneLegSquatLast week I was listening to Alwyn Cosgrove interview Mike Boyle about where the fitness industry is heading.

It’s a great interview.

Mike mentioned how he’s training his athletes using single-leg squats.

Got me interested in learning more, so I went to youtube to see if there were any videos on Mike’s method.

I found some, Mike has tons of videos in his channel.

And I also found a bunch of other exercise demo videos from other fitness professionals.

I spent about an hour watching dozens of different videos.

And two glaring things were missing from 99% of the videos I watched.

Missing Ingredient #1:

>> PERSONALITY <<

The videos were quick little demos of an exercise, and that’s it.

There was no attempt at relationship building, no credibility-establishing information and ZERO personality.

There was just a guy or a girl showing me how to do an exercise.

Because of the incredible proliferation of information on the internet these days, it’s CRITICAL that you remember…

** People do business with people they like! **

Any robot can do an exercise.  People don’t do business with robots.

Missing Ingredient #2:

>> CALL TO ACTION <<

After the exercise demo, the videos just ended.

Just left me hanging to figure out how, if I was so inclined, to get more instruction from this person.

And that’s just wrong.

You don’t have to be aggressive in your video, but you do have to do something if you want youtube to be an effective fitness marketing medium for you.

And that something is…tell people how to get more from you.

Just tell them to subscribe to your youtube channel: how to do it, and why they should do it (what’s in it for them).

Personality differentiates you, and a call to action (instructions on what to do next and why to do it) builds your list and your marketshare.

If you’re going to take the time to make a neat little video, make that video work for you.

Remember, EVERY video you create should stand on its own as a fitness marketing tool.

You don’t need to be elaborate with your fitness marketing on your videos, but at a minimum there needs to be authentic personality to magnetize people to you, and a call to action so they know how to get more from you.

Make it a great day,

Eric

P.S. Here’s an interesting tid-bit for you…

In our Monday morning company meeting we discuss a lot of the numbers from the previous week.  All sorts of numbers. One of the categories we look at is product sales. It’s note-worthy that our product Legal Protection For Your Fitness Business continues to sell briskly week-in and week-out.  Which makes sense, because smart fitness business owners know it’s not just about what you make…but what you keep.

If you’re “naked” and unprotected, you’re asking for trouble and leaving the door ajar for people to take what you worked so hard to build.

For more information on Legal Protection for Your Fitness Business (put together by a fitness business owner who also happens to be one of the best lawyers in America), go here.

    Eric,

Thanks for the great article on what’s missing in Videos – this is a strong lesson that transcends all business and not just fitness. This would hold true for other forms of media too. One should always be branding themselves and their businesses.

Thanks again for this common sense – once again proving that common sense isn’t always so common!

You are exactly right Eric. Most of the videos I’ve seen are very bland and don’t really leave an impression w/ me.

  4. Hi Eric,

Great post. You’re so right. How’s this for personality…

Some bloopers from a cooking demo series I’m working on. Fun stuff!
