Get Alignment With Your CV->M->V->G->P

Hope you had a great holiday weekend.
We’re back up and running after a busy week of moving over here.
This morning I’m writing this e-mail from our new office, which is about 70% up and running as of 09:00 this morning.
Our phone systems are working, but we can’t receive calls yet… so bear with us as we catch up from limited support last week.
I’m interviewing final candidates for our new customer service manager this afternoon, so we’ll have another team member here to dig in and help out in the next couple days.
Alright, let’s get onto week, shall we?
I’ll start by breaking down the cryptic subject line in this mornings email.
Here’s what CV->M->V->G->P stands for:
Core Values –> Mission –> Vision –> Goals –> Projects
And one of the BIG secrets to getting more of the RIGHT things done (which I go into great depth on, and give you proven tools for organization and effectiveness in Project Manager Pro), is getting alignment between these 5 for yourself and your company.
I’ll break down each one a little bit here for you here.
But for the full overview, pick up your copy of Project Manager Pro while it’s still offered at the measly early bird discount investment of just $67 (price goes up to $97 this Friday).
CORE VALUES: Are essentially the ‘things’ you stand for.
Defining what you stand for and staking those values in the ground gives you a north star to navigate by.
Over time a lot of things change in your business (and therefore your life).
Your products change, your service offerings change, your customers may change, and so on.
For instance, just a few years ago fitness training was all about private training. Now private training is not nearly as popular and in as much a growth mode as group training.
Not to mention the different techniques for teaching exercise, and so on that continue to evolve over time.
But what will NOT change is who you have defined yourself to be (personally and professionally) and what you stand for.
Rather than go into great depth here (because this could be an entire post in itself) I’ll simply share some examples with you of how some great companies have defined their core values:
DISNEY
- No cynicism
- Nurturing and promulgation of “wholesome American values”
- Creativity, dreams, and imagination
- Fanatical attention to consistency and detail
- Preservation and control of the Disney magic
SONY
- Elevation of the Japanese culture and national status
- Being a pioneer – not following others; doing the impossible
- Encouraging individual ability and creativity
NPE
- Personal responsibility and accountability
- Kaizen: Constant, steady, improvement
- Honesty and integrity
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching
- Overdeliver
If you want to pick up a great article with more detail on this go to the Harvard Business Review website, search “Collins” and you’ll find an article by Jim Collins titled “Building Your Company’s Vision” for $6.
MISSION: Your mission statement is what gives your company heart.
And it answers the questions:
- Why are you doing what you are doing?
- What is the purpose for why you started your business?
VISION: I like to describe vision to the clients we work with as your flashlight going down a dark alley.
As you’re walking, your vision is ALWAYS looking out. And the spectrums best to lookout are 5 year, 3 year, and 1 year.
The further out you look, it’s not always as clear or in focus just yet… but looking outward into the future will help you find and reach a destination. And make necessary course corrections along the way.
Your vision will change and morph too, and that’s OK. The point is that you’ve defined a vision… and are heading in it’s direction rather than simply standing still spinning your wheels.
GOALS: Alright, now we get to something that most are familiar with: Goals.
You’ve written them down before. And chances are if you’re a former athlete (as I am, and many of our clients are) then you’ve had coaches work with you on goal setting for various performances and achievements over the years.
Well, now it’s time to take those same principles and into your business and life!
Generally speaking, in terms of business, you’ll want to focus on an annual goal and some quarterly goals.
Over here we had set 3 quarterly goals for Q2. Two of the three came out just about on target (one over target, one just shy). And a third still needs some attention… but we decided to shift gears and leave that one behind for a little while right now.
Now we’re about to start Q3: July, August, September.
Have you set any goals yet for this quarter? If so, what are your top 3?
I’ve got mine right on the white board up on my office wall. And I review them every single day.
Whenever I find myself busy with a bunch of things to do, one of the questions I always ask myself is “What’s the most important thing I can be doing right now?”
And you can bet it’s working on projects that support those top quarterly goals.
PROJECTS: As you’ve got the top 4 in order, now projects get really simple in the sense that it’s MUCH easier to determine which projects are the MOST important ones that deserve your utmost focus and attention.
And of course, the projects that are most important are the ones that support your quarterly goals!
With that clarity… you can now go right to work specking out your project with all the systems and tools I’ve given you in Project Manager Pro.
Check out this resource. I know you’ll really benefit from it and it’s on sale for just $67 until this Friday here.
To your success,
Sean
P.S. Do you really need to define your CV ->M->V->G->P to get things done and make money? No you don’t. But if you want to invest your time in building REAL business that is built to last and is around in 5 years, 10 years, 20 years… and either continues to provide for you and your family or gives you a tangible asset to sell… then I highly recommend you get on board. Besides that, work is just a whole lot more fun and rewarding when you have alignment in all that you do… and KNOW each day the actions you are taking are bringing you closer to actually building the business (and life) you want to have.
